One of the main arguments for why Americans should stockpile high-powered weapons was simple: tyranny. The government must never be allowed to dominate the people. “The government should be afraid of the people, not the other way around,” was the refrain. Citizens must have as many guns as possible. That way, if a dictator ever rose in America, he could be stopped.
