Some personal news: I’m no longer with KNX. After 10 good years, it’s hard to say goodbye to so many talented friends and colleagues. But the future, as they say, is wide open—and today it’s open a little wider than it was yesterday.
Ironically—or maybe poetically—this Saturday marks my 45th anniversary in radio. (I got my start while I was still in high school.) So yes, I’ve been here before. More than once. Everyone in this business knows that getting cut loose isn’t a bug—it’s a feature.
When I woke up this morning, I was racking my brain for an idea for Tuesday’s Substack post. And, well... here it is. A little early.
Many of those 45 years were spent in music—programming stations, spinning records, hosting shows. Then came 2006, a long “between gigs” stretch that led me to try something I never thought I’d do: news. And as it turns out, nearly 20 years later, that was the real calling all along. Who knew?
So... no, I’m not going to say I’ve got irons in the fire or that I’ll be announcing something soon. I’m just now stoking that fire. But I’m open. And grateful. And maybe even a little excited.
One thing I’ve learned in my life: it’s fine to say yes quickly, but always wait before you say no. There are far more surprises hiding in yes than in no.
To everyone who’s subscribed to this Substack—thank you. Now would be an excellent time to upgrade to a paid subscription, by the way. I intend to keep slinging words here as long as my brain keeps firing. I’m committed to posting no fewer than three articles a week—including some brand new short fiction, and quite a few pieces I’m working on right now. I hope to give you a reason to be glad you’re spending the five bucks.
Oh—and yes, at the constant urging of my current wife (and my first wife, and a fair number of friends), I’m finally making plans for a podcast. Because I still have a face for radio.
I love you all. Some more than others.
WHHHHAAAAT?
I wish you success in all your endeavors. Most of all I hope you find passion and happiness.
